Delirious?
Shepherd's Bush Empire, London 7th November 2000 By James Stewart Kicking off the UK leg of the Glo tour with a return to their regular west London haunt, Delirious? continue to have no trouble filling the Empire to capacity. The anticipation among fans was tangible, and by playing "Deeper" within minutes of arriving on stage, the band informed us that this was not the set regulars had grown used to. The emphasis on the Glo tracks was strong, with seven of the album's fifteen songs appearing during the 90 minute set. This made for a strong "worship event" vibe, which seemed to absorb the crowd but left this reviewer feeling uneasy due to the clear emphasis on the band as the focus of the proceedings. While Delirious? may try to put the emphasis on Christ, their pivotal role in the proceedings was clear, and as a result the setting didn't seem right for a time of praise and worship. While the Glo material dominated, it was older songs which really shone, particularly "Heaven" and "Bliss" from Mezzamorphis, the latter taking on the dynamism that previous performances had only hinted at and entirely eclipsing the recorded version. The other highlight was a brief acoustic set which saw the peculiarly attired Martin Smith (wearing what he jokingly referred to as his wife's pyjamas) led the crowd in low-key renditions of "When All Around Has Fallen" and "Intimate Stranger" accompanied by Tim Jupp's tasteful Rhodes organ. Sadly the Glo material
didn't match the energy of the Mezzamorphis tracks which were certainly
the most satisfying. Nevertheless, the crowd appeared to leave satisfied
while, looking forward to the new album next year which should see Delirious?
returning to their main path after the short break they took for Glo.
