Miranda Stone and Sarah Lentz
All Angels Coffeehouse
October 20, 2000
by Chris MacIntosh aka Grandfather Rock

The All Angels Coffeehouse located at 251 W. 80th St. in New York City is unique in church sponsored coffeehouses. The musicians who perform there are not expected to be deep theologians or eloquent evangelists, who can get dozens of people to respond to an altar call. They are expected to be men and women who utilize the gift of music that God has given to them and can move our hearts and touch our souls with their songs. Into that setting recently stepped Canada's own Miranda Stone and New York City resident Sarah Lentz.

The show started an hour late due to traffic congestion holding up Miranda, but once everything got going it was a night of great music and fun. Miranda took the stage first and halfway through the first song broke her G-string. After that, her set could have been titled, "Lessons in guitar tuning with an occasional song thrown in for good measure". Her banter with the audience, which included tales of growing up on a rose orchard and playing Rambo in varying degrees of dress, trust me you had to be there, were excellent and entertaining. She played a nice cross-section of tunes from both of her releases as well as some new material. Besides having an extremely bent sense of humor this girl really cooks musically. Miranda's set list included:

"Don't You Cry Out"
"Power Of One"
"7 Deadly Sins"
"Thorn In Your Hand"
"Never Lick The Stamp"
"Push"
"Never The Less The Dog"
"Rest"

Up next was Sarah Lentz. What can I say about this young woman? When I think about what is cool about the New York City music scene, two words come to mind, Sarah Lentz. Accompanied by Richard Hammond on electric and double bass, she worked her way through the majority of her album release,"No Going Home" as well as treating us to some newer material. A regular on the New York club scene she has a silky alto voice that can melt butter and is a prolific songwriter as well as a wiz on the piano. Among the growing number of gifted singer-songwriters that are making names for themselves in NYC, she is a force to be reckoned with. Sarah's set list included:

"Angel"
"Erase Him"
"The World Turns"
"No Going Home"
"Lion And The Lamb"
"Healing"
"Listen"
"Sailor Song"
"Open Up"
"Alive"
"Nothing To Lose"
"The Last Song"
