Over
the Rhine at Cornerstone 2000
The Gallery Stage Bushnell, IL July 8, 2000 By Israel Kloss The mesmerizing sounds of Over the Rhine waft through the sticky night air in the Cornerstone cornfields. To my left, a guy nods off. Another slumps over in front of me. Somebody pokes him. He awakens. The guy on the left nods off again. Over the Rhine heads into their 14th song and Karen Berquist's ambient vocals blow over the audience in the gentle summer breeze. Sounds so ethereal fill our ears, we can almost see the streets of gold and hear the gurgling brooks. Her voice seems more fitting floating out of some smokey Bourbon Street jazz club than cornfields in Illinois, but no less impressive. Karen's sensuous, rich and silky voice has a calming affect like no other vocalist. It's the breathy, slow, painless and almost slothful quality that hypnotizes the listener. Her voice defines Over the Rhine, yet the band's ambient rock sound almost perfectly compliments her voice and her amazingly calm and smooth stage presence. There is a sense of magic in watching a live performance by Over the Rhine. There will never again be a live band exactly like them. There' s a sense that you are watching a performance of such awe-inspiring excellence, that few bands have ever risen to. The crowd favorites were mostly songs from their album Good Dog Bad Dog. Favorites included "Lucy" (fan club album)," All I Need" (GBBD), "Rapsodie" (Patience), and "Latter Days" (GDBD). After about 20 songs of their 2-hour set, they thanked the crowd and tried to call it a night, after which they received a standing ovation, leading to three standing ovations and 23 songs in front of at least a thousand-member audience. It
seemed as if Over the Rhine couldn't give a better live performance, but
they seem to only get better each time. This was a live performance that
had to be seen at any legitimate cost.
