Nightmare Before Christmas, The (1993)
Cast: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey
Director: Henry Selick
Release Year: 1993

Breaking the string of three-star movies this week is the re-release of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. This fabulously inventive animated feature was one of the most artistically creative movies of the '90s. Chock-full of Burton's trademark fetishes--scarecrows, skeletons, and inanimate objects come to life--the stop-motion animation (under the direction of Henry Selick, who also did James and the Giant Peach) is a wonder to behold. The story, such as it is, concerns Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who is captivated when he stumbles upon Christmas town. Little does he realize the two holidays don't really go together. While the narrative itself isn't much, Danny Elfman's score and musical numbers transport the movie to a whole different level. The chance to see all this spectacle on the big screen shouldn't be missed.
