For their debut release, Goldsmiths have brought in veteran producer Phil Goss (As If...) to help them craft their diverse pop-rock tunes into an album with plenty of variation. Goldsmiths's focus is extremely evangelistic and that comes through clearly in the lyrics which are delivered by a voice that at times has a bit of the nasal sound of Mark Chadwick (the Levellers). Musically, the band crosses a range of styles from vibey-pop reminiscent of King of Fools-era Delirious? to the reggae-tinged "Nothing Without Love." A few tracks (such as "Red") feel a little dated and the album could do with a more cohesive feel, but the individual tracks are performed well. A worthy first effort, I Know You Know, shows a band just beginning to find its direction. As time progresses, hopefully, the sound will begin to become more cohesive. James Stewart 06/17/2000
