July 2000 Pick of the Month
The Ever Passing Moment
Artist: MxPx
Label: Atlantic

Everyone's favorite left coast punk band, MxPx, is back with their 8th label offering, The Ever Passing Moment.  There has been a torrent of punk releases in the recent months, many of which can be filed in your CD rack under, "Sounds like…".  In a sea of cookie-cutter punk bands, can MxPx separate themselves from the rest?

Yes.  This is a very good punk record.  MxPx has always been musically tight and this album growing lyrical maturity for singer/songwriter Mike Herrera.  While still not anything ground breaking, the lyrics show vast improvement with each new album.  Themes of faith, love, and living life dominate.  Several songs try to inspire listeners to experience life (with God's help) before it is gone.  As "Buildings Tumble" states, there is nothing sadder than a wasted life:

"Waking up is hard to do when no one loves you years pass by, that's something that you have gotten used to "

Overall, this is a very good effort from MxPx.  The production is adequate, a clear advantage of moving to a major label, the music is tight, and the vocals are clean. MxPx and punk fans will definitely enjoy this album.  I did.  If you are looking to see if punk could be for you, try this one on for size.
