One of These Days
Artist: The Ned Kelly Band
Label: Indie
Length: 12 tracks /54.03 minutes

Try to imagine the Electrics's Sammy Horner with a blues growl. If you succeeded (and of course having heard the Electrics probably makes that easier) you've got a pretty accurate sonic picture of Ned Kelly's vocals on this bluesy recording.

In the sleeve notes Kelly refers to Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Stones, Tom Petty and Steve Earle as musical influences. While not quite of the standard of those artists, the music of his eight-piece band's reflect their blues roots, with the odd touch of saxophone or mandolin to round out the sound. Lyrically the dominant theme is best summed up in the phrase "you'd better get ready to meet your Lord", used repeatedly on "Get Ready" and supported by pictures in the sleeve of "the end of the world is nigh" placards. While preparedness is important there is a feel that this message has been pushed a little too hard by the end of the album given that the current life has an importance too.

A competent blues recording, this album might have been better as an EP; there aren't quite enough ideas to fill the twelve tracks.
