When Delirious' Furious? Records announced that they would be adding to their roster, the name of Ripcord was among those thrown around as potential new recruits for that stable. Nothing's been confirmed, but given this debut CD they'd certainly turn a few heads if Furious? did invite them in. Ripcord are an evangelistic band and as such their lyrics are explicit in their expressions of faith. That's set alongside music that's reminiscent in parts of female-fronted outfits like Dakota Motor Company, with plenty of fuzzy guitars and some surf influence. These days that doesn't sound as fresh as it once did, and the arrangements could do with something to make them stand out more, but there's plenty of energy and the band do what they do well. On the strength of this, it is easy to imagine Ripcord being an excellent band live. The recording could do with a little more work to help them stand out in a crowded scene, but they certainly have the potential to do that. James Stewart 08/20/2000
