Avalon's Oxygen Tour
Rialto Square Theater- Joliet, IL
October 19, 2001
Story by Andy Argyrakis

It's hard to believe just how far Avalon's come since their inception nearly six years ago. I can vividly recall seeing the poppy foursome open up for Twila Paris' "Where I Stand" tour, performing songs from their self-titled debut. I remember that show happening in a dank college gymnasium and was glad to see the group perform in a classier venue this time through.

The gorgeous Rialto was bathed in fluorescent lighting that shined brightly against several white tapestries as the group took the stage to the beat of "Take You At Your Word." Backed by a full backing band, they launched into the bouncy "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," followed by the soothing "Always Have, Always Will." It was that contrast, between glossy pop and peaceful praise, that gave Avalon a sense of balance throughout their set. Throughout the night, the group got to most of their hits, sometimes incorporating them into a melody. Such was the case during the blending of "Picture Perfect" and "Can't Live a Day Without You." The pairing worked well for the group, who soon followed suit with the new song "Come and Fill My Heart."

The new material was mildly received by the audience, who perhaps haven't had the time to engulf themselves in it like the past projects in Avalon's catalogue. Nonetheless, "Come and Fill My Heart" clearly kept the attention of the crowd when Avalon gathered around the piano, singing along passionately to the words of praise. The stellar number could have made an even better live showing if the string section found on the studio version was piped in, or perhaps even synthesizer generated.

Shortly thereafter, Avalon delivered an early holiday gift to the crowd in the form of "Don't Save it All for Christmas Day." The tender message of spreading Christ's joy all year round shone through the powerful live rendition. That energy continued as the group wrapped up their set with "Make It Last Forever" and the inevitable encore "Testify to Love." Even the balcony stood to sing those words to cap off an enjoyable evening of Avalon's pleasant favorites.
