Clementine
The Bitter End
January 9, 2001
by Chris MacIntosh aka Grandfather Rock

Now you may ask and justifiably so, who is Clementine? The group consists of Annie Quick of Stickman Jones on vocals, guitar and mandolin, Laura Summerhill on vocals, guitar, banjo and mandolin and Cathy Dryden on vocals and fiddle. Annie had stated that this was going to be "a jangly girl kinda thing." The band at times also consists of Beardon "Spanky" Coleman on percussion and Jad "Bob" Mintun on bass. The girls have been honing their skills in small venues for the last few months and are now ready to be let loose on the world. They recently played at the New York City premiere of the Coen brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou and stole the show. So it was on a cold January night that Clementine played to a packed out house at one of New York's most famous rock clubs.

The trio plus Spanky and Jad Bob took to the stage to the thunderous applause of an zealously enthusiastic crowd, which included some of the city's best singer-songwriters such as Sufjan Stevens and Sarah Lentz. The group proceeded to play a 45 minute set of original material as well as some covers of tunes from the Coen Brothers film. The girls traded off lead vocals and shared harmonies in a way that reminded me of The Lost Dogs. Although the group is a trio at heart, it is clear that we were listening to three women who could hold their own at any venue at any time. Although because of her time as the vocalist for Stickman Jones, Annie has more stage time under her belt, it was obvious to all present that Laura and Cathy were complete professionals.  These ladies blew the roof off of the place and quickly [no pun intended] reinforced why they are becoming the talk of the town.

The set list consisted of:
"Down In the River"
"Eight"
"Heat"
"Dear Prudence"
"Keep On the Sunnyside"
"Motherless Child"
"Orphan Train"
"Orphan Girl"
"Wounded Man"
"Lullaby"
"Don't Be Weary"
