Stickman
Jones/Jennifer Knapp
The Bitter End/The Mercury Lounge July 28, 2001/August 4, 2001 By Chris MacIntosh aka Grandfather Rock New York City experienced two nights of wonder filled music recently. On a Saturday, the new Stickman Jones played to a standing room only crowd at the Bitter End. The group was to have used the evening to introduce former Burlap To Cashmere keyboardist, Josh Zandman as their opening act. He backed out at the last minute and was replaced by singer/songwriter Beardon Coleman who did a phenomenal job and was accompanied by Clementine member Laura Summerhill. Stickman also used the evening to introduce the band's two newest members, Joel Schroeter on drums and percussion and Ted Dove on guitars and mandolin. Added to old timers Annie Quick on vocals, guitars and mandolin and Jad Mintun on bass guitar, the group, a foursome now, jelled perfectly and sounded as if they had been playing together for years instead of just a few months. This was the group's first public performance with this new lineup and the crowd loved every minute of it. The set was split evenly between old and new material. Although now more electric, the group still retains their trademark sound due largely to Annie's distinctive vocal style. The group was assisted on one tune by New York songstress Sarah Lentz. Over the last few years, the band has gone through many changes but still remains one of New York City's treasures. The set list included:
Less then a week later, the city was invaded by the diminutive firestorm that is Jennifer Knapp. She hit the stage at the Mercury Lounge and blew the roof off of the place with the very first song. Her new group consists of Derek Wyatt on drums, Brad Lyons on guitar, Christa Black on electric violin and, taking a hiatus from Sixpence None The Richer, Justin Cary on bass guitar. Jen was in the city working on her new album so everyone from the band on down to the crowd in the packed house was pumped to the max. This new ensemble produces a new, harder, funkier, Midwestern rock sound which sounds perfect with the new material. Jennifer Knapp has graduated from just another CCM girl with a guitar to a full blown rock chick. It was fun watching producer Toby Mac in the crowd groovin' along to an extremely tight band. This show gave me a new found respect for a performer that I have seen many times before. What can I say - this kid smokes!!! Her set list included:
