Spiritual Awakening
Artist: MacMac Productions
Label: Unidisc Music
Length: 19/69:51

MacMac Productions is the brainchild of Canadian producer Mac Thornhill.  Their second album, Spiritual Awakening, is billed as carrying “all styles of music, from R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap, House, and even classic ballads.”

“I Got a Joy” is the album’s highlight, featuring Mac and Alonzo Thornhill on vocals.  “I Found Life” isn’t bad, either.  The rest of the CD, unfortunately, is nothing special.  The tunes are repetitive, backed by computerized drums, and not much else.

The album also features many pops and clicks in the background, making it sound like an old vinyl record at times.  The liner notes indicate this was an intentional choice, but the nostalgia is lost on me - I found it annoying on a CD.

Selections of traditional songs “How Great Thou Art” and “The Lord’s Prayer” are safe choices, but again, the quality of the vocals doesn’t stand out--every church has someone that is as talented.

Thornhill would do well to study the work of Kirk Franklin, or Rev. James Cleaveland, and use these as models for future work. Spiritual Awakening, while a noble effort, doesn’t get it done for me.
