Everyone has their unique place in the firmament of God's handiwork. For Mary-Kathryn, her place is to open the minds and expand the horizons of her listeners. On One Spirit, Mary-Kathryn delves into many styles of ethnic music, giving a strong "world beat" or international flavor to the disc. Employing complex rhythms tamped on various types of drums from around the world, One Spirit musically and lyrically covers a lot of ground. From the opening track through the last strains of ethereal voices, one feels transported to another place, possibly even another time. Similar to the aboriginal-sounding Aussie group Tribal Trance, Mary-Kathryn winds her lofty voice around spiritual themes while providing a taste of exotic musical flavors not often proffered in the Christian mainstream. Comparisons to Twila Paris’ Sanctuary and early Enya would be appropriate, as the music continually moves around the soundscape, sometimes ponderous, sometimes exuberant, yet always uplifting and grand. Employing other languages and ethnic styles keeps a sense of variety and wonder. Fans of the eclectic and esoteric will enjoy One Spirit, and even mainstream CCM listeners will find a track or two to love. Zik Jackson 3/25/2001
