Artist: Michael Hutchence Label: V2 Records Length: 13 Tracks After touring the world for over a decade and thrilling football arenas throughout the entire nation, INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wanted to take a step back from the spotlight. He originally began work on a solo project in 1996, but after the successful release of his band's Greatest Hits album ran its course, it was time for him to go back in the studio to record a new INXS project followed by a tour. He was able to put the finishing touches on his self-titled project in between all the chaos, resulting in a remarkable solo effort. The project obviously stems from his time spent in the group while focusing on more mature, personal lyrics, as opposed to songs that could fit the set list for INXS' big rock shows. Take for instance the hit single "Slide Away," which features U2's Bono. The track was of particular lyrical poignancy speaking of the struggles Hutchence was going through at the time. By the latter portion of the 90's, this star was tired of the rock and roll lifestyle, but also felt bound by the problems that came out of his constant travel, fame, and fragmented personal life. "Slide Away," as well as tracks like "Fear" and "Don't Save Me From Myself" also highlighted such feelings. The song "Put the Pieces Back Together" shows Hutchence admitting his troubles in the hopes of getting back on his feet. Musically, the track is a mellow pop jam with a small choir like chorus in the background. This disc marks Hutchence's first and last solo album due to the fact that the star took his own life shortly after recording it. Listeners can look to his struggles as a foreshadowing of this tragic event while also being able to relate to their own struggles or to those of friends or family members. If anything, this disc should serve as an example of a wonderful artist who faced personal problems in the public eye. Although he was not able to overcome such pressure, perhaps fans can use his songs to identify with struggles while calling out to God to pass through the rough waters. Andy Argyrakis 1/7/2001
