Radial  Angel
Artist: Radial Angel
Label: Thin King Entertainment
Length: 11 tracks/43:20

Oklahoma City alt-rock band Radial Angel puts its best foot forward and comes out of the garage with its self-titled release on Thin King Entertainment.  The creative name comes from the literal definitions of the words: “radial,” going from a central point outwards, and “angel,” a messenger of God.

Like many a college-age band, founders Jared Taber (vocals, guitar)  and Daniel Buckmaster (bass) originally started their rock band in 1995 as a way to meet girls.  The plan worked, and they decided they needed to learn to actually play their instruments.  Adding drummer Tommy Perkins and lead guitarist Jeremy Dolezel, the band recorded their demo, sold some copies, and went for the full album in 2000.

Radial Angel is a decent effort for a debut album.  Similarities to modorn rockers Luna Halo, a touch of MxPx, and the raw energy of a cougar on the run characterize the CD.  From the straightforward “Jesus Loves Me” to the somewhat mystical “Down,” the band wields honest lyrics with unfettered youthful energy and a brash sound.  Touching mostly on themes of freedom, the quartet shows a ray of hope in their tunes.  “Set Free” is a testimonial to redemption, and the musical style on the track sounds similar to fellow Oklahoman Chad Cox’s solo debut Safe Inside Ourselves.

While not as skilled or tightly produced as some other indie bands, Radial Angel explores a wide range of musical creativity  Not bad for learning their instruments after the fact.  The lyrical content is uplifting and encouraging while maintaining a raw honesty that leads to intimacy.

With its debut release, Radial Angel knocks on the door of opportunity.  Who will answer?
