Artist: Raul Malo
Label: OmTown Music
URL: http://www.higheroctave.com
Length: 12 tracks/47:30

The Mavericks are one of the more successful country music acts of the 90s. In this solo effort, lead singer Raul Malo takes a turn in his musical path in a decidedly non-country direction.  This collection of tracks is danceable, upbeat Latin-flavored music, no doubt due to Malo's heritage. The very first track, "Today," with its lively rhythm and instrumentation ensures that the listener knows this album is anything but country. Gone is the country twang, in favor of a silky-smooth baritone, equally at home on the English and Spanish tracks. The album ends with a couple of 50s-sounding tracks, "Let's Not Say Goodbye" and "Since When."  Other standout tracks include "Every Little Thing" and "De Ti Me Olvidare."  On the whole, a wonderful blend of styles (even big band works its way in) and well-crafted songs, with lush production.  It might not be country, but it's good.
