The Lost Dogs
All Angels Cafe
New York City
October 25, 2002
by Chris MacIntosh aka Grandfather Rock

The most professional show in town came to the best listening room in the "Big Apple" on a recent Friday night and the result was a show this town will not soon forget. This was the first time that the Dogs have ventured forth to New York City and it has been over twenty four years since Terry Taylor has played in the area. Rather than individually playing solo sets the guys took to the stage together for a full blown acoustic set. What followed was an evening of perfect songs and harmonies. When these guys are having a good night vocally it a wonderful thing to behold or rather to hear. You could tell that the guys have been out on the road for awhile just by the way they sounded. With the exception of "Starting Monday" and "Joel" all of the tunes performed during the course of the evening were from the various Lost Dogs albums that we have been treated to over the last ten years. If the new tune that was performed entitled "Moses" is any indication of the forthcoming album, Nazarene Crying Towel, it is going to be a winner.

From the preconcert music choice, The Sons of the Pioneers, to the actual performance everything cried out professionalism. I have had the chance to see the band in various settings since their inception and I don't think that I have ever heard them sound better. The on stage interplay not only during the songs but during the in between times showed three guys who truly enjoyed each others company not only musically but socially.  Even though everyone played acoustic guitars, I was reminded on more than one occasion what a truly great guitar player Mike Roe is. Even though Terry and Derri played rhythm parts only, it was great to see them and be reminded of how proficient they are not only as singers but as musicians too. I have been going to concerts for almost forty years now and I would easily rank this in my top ten.
