At Home and On the Range: The Duo Live
Artist: Mike Marshall and Darol Anger
Label: Compass Records
Length: 12/63:07

Mike Marshall and Darol Anger have been playing together since 1978, as members of The David Grisman Quintet, the Montreaux Band, Psychograss, NewGrange, and the Anger/Marshall Band.  Marshall is an accomplished guitarist, mandolin player,
fiddler, and also throws in the mandocello, while Anger is featured on fiddle, and baritone violin.

At Home and On the Range shows the two artists exploring a variety of styles, combining their talents for a live concert album.  There is some jazz (“Big Man from Syracuse”), some Bill Monroe (“Old Dangerfield,” “Big Man,” and “Jerusalem Ridge”), and a lot of Irish/British string music.

“Gator Strut,” a Marshall original, stands out, if only because it sounds like nothing else on the album.

Wandering from bluegrass, veering into jazz, and careening headlong into the edges of rock and world music, At Home and On the Range shows that Marshall and Anger know each other’s strengths, and bring the best out in each other, trading solos and harmonizing with each other, to create a unique evening that is captured here on this CD.
