Logikos
Artist: Kurt M. Landre Label: Home Cooked Production Length: 16/70:04 Logikos defies classification it is styled as progressive rock, yet lo fi. Influences include Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, The Police, David Bowie, Taking Heads, Queen, Yes, and Devo. It comes across as a concept album, much like Kilroy Was Here (Styx) or 2112 by Rush. “Earth Control” portrays a man stuck out of his element this may be literal or just his general emotional state. It is the answer to the 80’s tune “Major Tom.” “Work It Out” features a saxophone line that makes it sound like Devo meets Talking Heads. “When It Goes” seems to be about apathy. “Not Coming Through” seems to reach for Duran Duran vocally to my ear (although the artist denies this). The album closes with “Here Comes the Flood”, a Peter Gabriel cover that may have spurred the concept for the rest of the disc. There are four bonus tracks at the end “One Word” is a cool 80’s new wave piece, and “Jacob’s Lullaby” is another standout, mixing Brahms’ Lullaby with a modern sound. Logikos should be listened to as a whole, given the way in which one song proceeds logically to the next, as if they were chapters in a book. It is an ambitious project that would benefit from real studio time, but the lo fi effect here somehow works. Brian A. Smith 18 August 2002
