Angels Wait: demos and lives tapes 1996-2001 Artist: Littlebird Label: Angelfins Music Length: 12/64:04 H’Amy “Littlebird” Nuara is likely to draw some comparisons to Jewel with _Angels Wait_. She has been performing at open mic nights, clubs, BART stations, coffeehouses, churches, and basically in front of anyone who will listen to her since 1996. _Angels Wait_ is equal parts Bjork and Phoebe from the TV show Friends. She has a strong voice that she uses to great effect from whisper to scream to breathy coquettishness to pointed commentary. “God Is An Insomniac” and “Magick” resemble Jewel both in style and in vocal tones, while “Equilibrium” is more in the vein of Rickie Lee Jones. Nuara shows some ability in the country/acoustic/folk arena, and the lyrical content is difficult to quantify it is alternatively pleasing and offensive, moving from heartfelt insight to social criticism to songs that seem straight out of a high school girl’s diary. “Visions of Erin,” a Sugarcubes-like song, may be about a girl, or about Ireland. “Xmas Song” is a modern version of the birth of Christ, portraying Christ being born with HIV, caused by an addition to crack. For those who like free-spirited, coffeehouse style, acoustic rock, _Angels Wait_ is for you. Littlebird is an interesting paradox: I could see her becoming famous with the right breaks, or playing in coffeehouses for the next thirty years with a small but loyal fan base, eagerly awaiting the next batch of songs.
