Star Trek: Deep Space 9; Season Four DVD The fourth season of Star Trek: Deep Space 9 is now on DVD, and Paramount has wisely decided not to change the successful formula it established that followed the release of the first season of The Next Generation last year. Season four continues the ongoing story of the Dominion threat upon the Federation and the Alpha Quadrant, beginning with an attack on Cardassia by the Klingons. The Klingons believe that the shape-shifting Dominion founders are behind the recent political unrest on Cardassia and have launched a violent policy of containment and conquest. The strong, versatile cast and complex storyline of the show are given a boost with the addition of Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), who joins the series as the station's new strategic officer and resident Klingon expert. The action and intrigue shift into overdrive this season as the tone of the show grows more intense as events unfold. Episodes of note include "Little Green Men," which sends Quark (Armin Shimmerman) and his relatives to Roswell New Mexico in 1947, and the very provoking "Hard Time," which takes a look at crime and punishment. The overall quality of the episodes shines, as the acting, writing, and effects give a balance to the season. The season four DVD set is a well-crafted set that in many ways surpasses the outstanding Next Generation series. Aside from the plethora of behind the scenes and making of segments, the series features the episodes in sparking color and sound. Gareth Von Kallenbach 8/7/2003
