  Marty Goetz: Songs of Israel
Artist: Marty Goetz
Label: Tovah Records 12217-90062 (2003)
Running Length: 40 minutes

Marty Goetz's latest album highlights a collection of songs associated with the Jewish heritage.  From the rousing "Hava Nagila" to the sentimental "My Yiddish Momme" to the heartfelt "Kol Nidre," this song grouping is not only for members of the Jewish faith but for everyone who appreciates inspiring music.

Goetz has a tenor voice reminiscent of Mandy Patinkin.  His version of "Exodus," complete with The Jerusalem Festival Choir, is triumphant.  This is one of five songs coming from popular folk music, Broadway, or the silver screen.  Also included is "Sunrise, Sunset" (Fiddler on the Roof), in which Goetz is purposely a quarter beat behind for poignancy.  The theme from "Schindler's List" is done with violin and keyboard and is a lush arrangement.  "Sabbath Prayer" (also from Fiddler on the Roof) is included as well as the clearly sentimental "My Yiddish Momme." "Hava Nagila" will have listeners dancing around their living rooms.

Goetz has clear pronunciation so that the words come through clearly.  This is always a plus when introducing new audiences to music from another country.  The arrangements are imaginative and they should be, coming from a musician who gained experience as Debby Boone's bandleader.  Marty Goetz is multifunctional.
