The Before I Sold Out EP
Artist: Luke Geraty
Label: Syntax

Luke Geraty is an independent hip hop artist out of the Twin Cities. Geraty displays his brand of East Coast hip hop on The Before I Sold Out EP, which is his debut release.

The Before I Sold Out EP is hardly an EP, since it has eleven tracks that time in at just over 45 minutes. More becomes less when Geraty's songs all start to sound like one continuous rhyme with trite lyrics about him selling out, not getting played on the radio and a little girl who deals with her difficult life by coloring.

The bright spots are the accompanying tracks, beats and sound bites that add some spark, but Geraty fails to deliver anything worth listening to more than once. The one exception to that is "Success," which features a guest that shows Geraty how hip hop is done by laying down a lyrical beat that grooves. The song also hits its mark with the theme of "the American dream" and clever lines by Geraty like, "I work the nine to five with the guy who's always high."

Putting it mildly, The Before I Sold Out EP is a mediocre album. Hopefully, if Geraty has indeed sold out, he's sold out to make a better record.
