  Against All Odds...
Artist: Last Second
Label: Vanishing Point Records
Lemgth: 5/14:27

Last Second is a hardcore punk outfit in the vein of NOFX or Agent Orange with one bonus: lyrics that can be easily understood, both in reference to vocal quality and in lyrical content.

Against All Odds... is a five song EP that hits hard, hits fast, and then moves on to another thought.  “Refuge,” a song about Christ’s blood, demonstrates this in its brevity:

The light in my eyes grows shallow, the light in my eyes grows cold
I’m still in love, a spider in a shadowed corner
I feel like I could cry (die)
Raise my fists and go into the sky
In your blood, I find refuge
Sheltered from the darkness.

That’s the entire song.  In six lines Alex Strand illustrates despair, futility,  hope, and the need for God.

“Way Home” and “Broken” deal with fractured personal relationships, while “Angst” dwells on more internal struggles.  “Dream” focuses on the pain of everyday life, and the need for a solution.

Loud and fast, intense yet sensitive, Last Second serves up a quarter hour of intelligent music, a plea to God to make life on Earth more tolerable.  I’m guessing that message would resonate with a few of us.
