Bill
Mallonee
Indianapolis, Indiana Wednesday, April 21, 2004 Reviewed by Brian Smith Originally, Bill Mallonee, Jake Bradley, and the latest addition to the cast of thousands, David Claassen, were to do a house concert in the Indianapolis area. Those arrangements fell through and once again, VOL-lister Jeff Grantham stepped up, found a place to have them play, and put out the word locally. The good news is that the venue was 90% filled. The bad news is that CATH Coffee and Tea House in Indianapolis only hold 30 to 40 people. And, as usual, it didn't matter. Bill Mallonee is one of those rare artists who give the same effort for 2 or 200. It was about a 75 minute show. Fans of the Vigilantes of Love Buddy Miller-produced gem Audible Sigh will like the new songs. It is obvious as Bill gets older, his love for Brenda comes out more and more in song, as evidenced in songs like “Where the Light Does Fall,” “You're the Only Girl for Me,” “Long Letter,” and “Two Become One.” Lead guitarist Jake bradley threw some Johnny Cash style guitar licks in on “Who Will You Love” as well as a few others. New guy David Claassen is still finding his way on some songs - having to be told what key stuff is in--but man, does this violin player sound good! Georgia residents will recognize some of your history in “The Kids Are On Drugs” as Bill name-checks Love Tractor and Pylon. Sometimes we forget just how good a songwriter that Mallonee guy is. Last night served notice that he is still getting it done. I gave him his copy of the "rarities box set" that seems to have caused so much controversy - he confessed he doesn't remember all of these songs. If we're lucky, a few of them could re-emerge in later dates...Bill also said that with Pin My Hope now including 22 songs, May could be optimistic for a release date, although he thinks it might be done by the end of that month. He said that producer John Keane was "too good and meticulous to let it be rushed." Thanks to Jeff for once again taking care of our favorite underdogs, and to Nora at CATH for providing a place to hear great live music.
