The
Beautiful Sessions
Artist: Bethany Dillon Label: Sparrow Length: 6 tracks / 22:10 min. We like girls with guitars. Jen Knapp won our hearts almost seven years ago.Sandra McCracken never disappoints. And Jill Paquette dazzled us last year with her knockout eponymous debut. Enter Bethany Dillon. Her Ed Cash-produced The Beautiful Sessions is a simple six-song “sneak peek” at what this artist is capable of. The results, however, leave much to be desired. The title track, for example, with its “Politik”-like intro and multiple layers render it a musically “busy” track, a far cry from the simplicity of other guitar songstresses before her. The Dillon-Cash combo try to go quirky/experimental/structureless on us in “Move Forward,” but the outcome is complicated and strange, with strings and Wurlitzer touches flying in and out of the mix without much compositional coherence. The acoustic tracks exclusive to this limited-edition disc are the only thing that fare somewhat better, giving us a clearer glimpse at the bare-bones singer that the polished, convoluted production of the studio cuts kept hiding from us. Please don’t let this modest batch of songs be the ultimate deciding factor on whether you like Bethany Dillon or not. But please do tread with caution. After all, this is just an introductory EP of sorts devised by her label leading up to her real debut, coming out in April. Andree Farias 02/16/2004
