Something to Believe In
Artist: Eddie Hedges
Label: Toucan Cove
Length: 15/50:32

For those of us who have spent any time in Cincinnati, Eddie Hedges is a very familiar name.  Formerly (and hopefully again in the future), the front man for Blessid [sic!] Union of Souls, Hedges has released has first gospel oriented project in Something to Believe In.

The fifteen songs flow well together here.  Hedges has a strong R&B style voice, and the feel of this disc surpasses the much more highly acclaimed projects recently released by George Rowe or Anthony Evans.  The leadoff track, “Head to the Sky”, contains a rap interlude that is done the way it should be it employs spoken word to get its point across, then goes back to the rest of the song.

Hedges’ songs seem to indicate he has turned a corner in his life.  “I Thank You” acknowledges God’s help in his growth.  “God Is Movin’ in My Life” points to the source of his new found peace and joy.  “Can I Share It With You?” reveals his compulsion to tell others of the changes.  “Praise” is self-explanatory.

“Momma, I” is a heart-wrenching ballad, in which Hedges thanks his mother for her guidance and influence, while also conveying his aching heart at her absence.  Some will think this the strongest track on the project.

Eddie Hedges has a long history in music, performing with highly acclaimed acts Bell Biv Devoe, Sheila E., Baby Face, and Mike & the Mechanics, among others.  Something to Believe In will do nothing to take away from his resume, and will enhance it in a CCM world that is constantly seeking true talent amidst a sea of mediocrity.
