  Time and Season
Artist:  Janira
Label:  Independent
Length:  12 Tracks/48:58

OK, let me get this straight for ya'll...Janira is a band.  And Janira is also the lead singer and lyricist of the band (Janira Campos is her full name).  And Janira has released Time and Season--a classy twelve song project that features a tasty smorgasbord of blues, jazz, soul, rock and even a little funkiness thrown in the mix for good measure.

Production and instrumentation on Time and Season are decidedly "old school" (and I mean this in a good way)...a welcome change to the symphony of syncopated drum machines, loops and squeaky clean sheen put on so many current CD releases.  Lyrically the songs have a frank Christian emphasis beginning with a song about the Old Testament "Sara," and featuring songs with titles that offer a good idea of which direction Janira is pointing ("Jesus," "This Too Shall Pass," "Holy Spirit."  The CD as a whole is meant to picture "how life has changing seasons" according to the press info sent with the project. The soulful and gritty musical backing add mightily to the songs--piano, saxophone, some very nice guitar solos (by Eric Platow--I HIGHLY recommend the guitar instrumental "Silenced"), and the powerful B-3 all create an interesting sonic bed.

Janira has a strong vocal style that reminds me of a smoother version of Bonnie Raitt--I hear Joni Mitchell, Crystal Lewis, and Nicole Mullen as well. It is interesting to note her vocal emphasis on certain lyrics while keeping in mind that she wrote them all.  There is only one weak song in an otherwise solid project-- "Divine Love" features an out of place drum machine loop that makes the song less organic than the rest of the music and does not flow as well.  But the rest of the smooth and soulful grooves on the CD make up for this.

Janira's Time and Season is a CD that will satisfy lovers of good blues, jazz-rock, fusion, and soul.  The musically influences are diverse and help to provide an engaging listen.   I recommend you find a Time and Season to give Janira a spin!  CD can be purchased here.
