Artist: The Swingcats
Label: Nagel Heyer CD 087
Length: 17 tracks/66:55

The Swingcats start their recording with a smoothly swinging instrumental take on “Lullaby of the Leaves,” highlighted by fine tenor sax work from the group leader, Frank Roberscheuten. The disc continues with a setlist full of standards like “I’ve Got a Crush On You,” “Undecided,” “Fools Rush In,” “Tea for Tea,” and “Laura”. The vocals of Shaunette Hildabrand fit well as she delivers the lyrics in a straight-forward fashion - not too coy or campy. Roberschueten plays several different types of saxophone plus the clarinet, which is not heard from much these days in a Jazz setting outside of New Orleans. On the title cut, Roberschueten quickly demonstrates that he can swing on the clarinet, playing a hot solo that is followed by a equally fine solo from Dirk Van Der Linden on piano. The clarinet appears again on “Undecided”, with Roberschueten  utilizing the entire range of the instrument followed by a Van Der Linden solo that digs deep into the  rhythm of the tune. The group even covers “King Porter Stomp” with Roberschueten breaking out his soprano sax for a darker toned voice that shows this man is a solid player on numerous instruments.

This is a fun recording to listen to - nothing particularly inventive occurs but with two talented players in the band, the Swingcats prove that they can live up to their name with this entertaining release that is very likable and sure to get future plays in my house.
