Andrew
Peterson's Christmas
Ryman Auditorium Nashville, TN December 12, 2004 By Zach Delph In its 4th consecutive year, Andrew Peterson hosted his annual Christmas show in Nashville, Tennessee. After being held at the historic Belcourt Theater last year, the show moved venues to another historic Nashville venue, the Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman’s intimate setting made for the perfect back drop to what would be an amazing show. Known for its incredible billing of guest artists, this year’s show did not disappoint. Andrew’s guests included Phil Keaggy, Pierce Pettis, Buddy Miller, Phil Madeira, Derek Webb, Jill Phillips, Sandra McCracken, Randall Goodgame, Andy Gullahorn, Andrew Osenga, Garett Buell, Steve Hindalong, Matt Slocum, Ben Shive, Gabe Scott. The night began with an “in the round” session featuring all the artists performing their own material. Highlights of this two hour session included Andrew Osenga’s “High School Band,” Derek Webb’s “I Want A Broken Heart,” Phil Madeira’s “Ghost of Johnny Cash,” Buddy Miller’s performance of Julie Miller’s “Manger Throne,” and Pierce Pettis’ “If It Wasn’t For the Night.” Closing out the “in the round” session was Phil Keaggy. In true fashion, Keaggy wowed the audience with his unique guitar stylings. It was nice to see each artist be able to showcase their own material as well as contribute their part to what was to come later in the night. After a quick set change, a very unique performance began. Performing all the selections from Andrew Peterson’s new Christmas album, Behold the Lamb of God, he was joined by the evening’s guests on each song. Derek Webb lent his vocals on “Deliver Us” and Jill Phillips had the audience in awe with her performance of “Labor of Love. Phil Madeira’s instrumentation proved why he is one of music’s most sought out session players. A five piece string section added a much needed element to the feel of the show. The Christmas set ended with the show-stopping closer “The Theme of My Song” as it revisited much of the album’s material in a very unique way. Andrew Peterson started the crowd in a singing of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and then made his way off stage. He was quickly followed by all the other musicians. It was truly a unique end to a unique evening. |
