Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Samson's Hairbrush (DVD) Approx. 45 min. Big Idea Bullies are the villains in the new Veggie Tales DVD, Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Samson's Hairbrush. The opening cartoon features a vignette where Junior Asparagus faces down a bully on the school playground. He find his courage and inspiration after a series of events where he gets "squashed", and the results are predictable, though heartwarming. The short is a "Silly Song by Larry", which features Larry the Cucumber's saga of a pizza delivery gone wrong. "Pizza Angel" is a fifties style tune that takes us from his opening pangs of hunger, to the sad conclusion of the ordeal, when the pizza man finally finds his house. This could be considered a counterpart to "His Cheeseburger," performed on an earlier disc. The main event involves Larry again, this time as Minnesota Cuke, museum curator by day, and explorer by, well, whenever it becomes necessary. His nemesis is Professor Rattan (Mr. Lunt), who continually frustrates Cuke's efforts to add to the historical displays at the museum. As expected, the story parodies a lot of the Indiana Jones movies, to good effect. Big Idea has always done a great job of keeping adult watchers interested while centering the story and animation to its target audience. Minnesota Cuke is no exception. Older viewers will laugh at the in jokes, while younger watchers will get caught up in the story itself. The lesson contained herein is based on Matthew 5:44. Who finds Samson's hairbrush first? What power does it unleash? Will Cuke finally triumph over the evil Rattan? I'm not spoiling the ending. Brian A. Smith
