Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo

There is no doubt about it; Hollywood is the biggest pimp ever. And not unlike a paid gigolo, movies are offered to bring us entertainment pleasure based on our particular needs at the moment. With that in mind it is safe to say that the studio should have dolled this one up a little bit more before putting it on the street.

In the sequel to the 1999 comedy Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Deuce (Rob Schneider) is forced back into the world of male escorting in order to clear his friend and former pimp TJ (Eddie Griffin) who has been framed for the murders of Europe’s top gigolos. As in the original, Deuce is stuck dating the oddest array of women on the planet and using his insight and heart to help them fit into society.

This version would have been smart to build upon the elements that made Male Gigolo a very decent comedy. Deuce used his heart of gold and Average-Joe ways to help imperfect women find ways to adjust to their defects and overcome their fear of inferiority. It had a strong undertone of loving yourself and others for who they are and realizing that outward beauty should take a back seat to the real person inside. Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo simply tries too hard. It knows what we want but instead of giving it to us tries to improve upon it.

The European version makes that focus a second thought; tossing it in almost as an afterthought. Then fills the gaps with some of the most outlandish, sexual innuendos and adjectives of anatomy ever scripted. But amazingly this film is so stupid that it somehow gets away with it. At the core this is a very funny movie with numerous laugh out loud moments. Eddie Griffen is in perfect form as he delivers line after line of pompous pimp vernacular, taking the ridiculous to extreme and making it work. You will however need a pimptionary to even keep up with most of what is said.

European Gigolo is Rated R for Pervasive Strong Crude and Sexual Humor, Language, Nudity and Drug Content. Those even remotely offended by jokes of sex and anatomy should steer far away from this one. Also fans of the first movie will be somewhat disappointed at the lack of effort put into the writing and direction of the current installment. Deuce Bigalow is a man with a message. Unfortunately it wasn’t told nearly as well this time around. Only giving it 2 out of 5 space cakes.
