Serenity

Every now and then a movie comes along that catches you by surprise. It sort of flies under the radar if you will. Serenity is one such flick. Based on the Fox TV series, “Firefly” and starring the original TV cast, Serenity is a fun, action packed adventure that has the essential elements. These elements come together to make a futuristic movie not only unique but appealing to the non sci-fi fan.

When The Captain of the space ship Serenity, Malcom Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), and his crew pick up a couple of galactic passengers they get more than just a young DR. (Sean Maher) and his telepathic sister, River.  River (Summer Glau), a young lady running from The Alliance, holds a secret that The Alliance will stop at nothing to keep hidden. Glau is the perfect blend of comatose zombie meets Ninja fighting machine. A former premiere ballerina, Summer carries grace and flexibility into the martial arts world giving it a flow and feel that sets her apart from other female action stars.

The success of Serenity is in the writing. There are truly funny moments between the characters that stems from the banter that writer/director Joss Whedon gives to his cast. The dialogue, quick and smart with wit, includes hints of Lil Abner-type inflections that are subtle yet add a unique and humorous element.

Fans of the TV series will be interested to know that the movie is actually the original concept for the pilot episode but do not think that you have to be familiar with the series to keep up. It takes no time to get the plot background and you will find yourself in the mix quickly.

Serenity is Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense violence and action, and some sexual references. Though at times it has the look and feel of a television series frequent movie goers will enjoy this film immensely and for fans of Firefly it is a must see.
