Separate Lies

If faced with the devastating news that your wife was having an affair, would you handle it like an English Gentleman or go left like a Chinese Nina? James Manning (Tom Wilkinson) chooses to do the former in Separate Lies, a Romantic Drama about a typical well-to-do British couple. James and Anne Manning (Emily Watson) have a flat in London as well as a house in the country and by all appearances seem perfectly happy on the outside. But, after many lonely evenings at home due to her husband's long office hours, Anne decides to seek the companionship of William Bule (Rupert Evertt).

One evening while Anne and William are driving home from a nearby pub, they hit a man and decide to leave him there along the road. Anne’s husband soon learns of his wife’s involvement in the crime along with the revelation of her affair with William. Still deeply in love with his wife he chooses not to report her to the authorities but, rather to become involved with the cover up. This leads to a downward spiral of lies by each of the parties involved.

While this has a great plot potential the movie really never quite reaches intensity but, being a British film you get the idea that it might be rude to do so.

Separate Lies portrays just how entangled and escalated our lies and deceptions can become, and the devastating effects an affair can have on marriage. Although ironically the movie is mainly about an affair, there are not any actual love scenes. The characters very rarely seem to react with much emotion to any of the traumatic situations they are faced with. I think most people faced with those types of situations would have a little bit more to "say" about it, Separate Lies keeps a very subdued tone throughout the whole movie, never really reaching a climax. This is another one of those movies that just leaves you with that "OK, so what feeling?" at the end, never really giving you a feeling of closure. With look at Separate Lies, I'm Cindy Mungle.
