Raw-Word
Artist: Gypsy Carns,The Blues Preacher Label: Musark 2004 Length: 32:28 Using the delta-blues musical format, Gypsy Carns combines Messianic lyrics for a unique blend of authentic American music. His energy and commitment are evidenced throughout _Raw-Word_. Carns' current spiritual career began in 1992, but he has been performing since 1963. In 1994 he relocated to Nashville to carry out his vision to spread the Word, leading us to his new album. Raw-Word is an all acoustic-foot-stompin'-high energy all out Shout to (and for) the Lord. Ten seconds into "Rainbow" and you know you are in for something special. "Satan Never Sleeps," "Jesus is Risin'," "Your Sins Will Find You Out," and "Can't Cheat the Reaper" continue in this vein. More personal are "I'm Alright" and "Save My Soul." Carns gravelly vocals (think a rougher Barry McGuire) and mournful harmonica show the conviction and change in this man's life. Favorite here is the closing track "Pray for Love." There is an anthemic, Americana feel here. A pleading for all of us to pray for "the men of earth to pray for love." Carns is an amazing musician. Because this music flies in the face of the more bright pop in CCM, the vocals grab you for a while, but you will come realize the instrumental strength of this one man band. The blues is a sorely missed genre in contemporary Christian music. If you love the blues, add Carns to your must have list. Bob Felberg 2/14/2005
