Artist: Amanda Halula
Label: Independent
Length: 10 tracks/38:14

Amanda Halula proves exactly one thing with this independent album: she has an amazing voice. Think of a hybrid of Tracy Chapman, Adrienne Liesching, and Kelly Clarkson, taking the best of those three vocalists, with a hint of Miranda Stone-like attitude, and you kind of get the idea. Her powerful alto voice makes the best of this material, which is sadly not quite up to the quality of the singer. There are interesting turns of phrase (the lyrics are all penned by Halula) and nice melodies, but nothing on this album really jumps out to make it stand out of the crowd. The style is basically R&B/soul-influenced, guitar-based, radio-friendly pop.

But Halula's voice certainly makes up for the lack of musical originality. Although there is more to be desired from the songcraft, this is a voice to listen for in the future! Some of the better tracks include "Black Coffee," "Eye to Eye," and "Dream Maker." Here's hoping she can find some more powerful melodies and arrangements which help show off her vocal abilities to a wider audience.
