My Super Ex-Girlfriend Stars: Uma Thurman, Luke Wilson, Anna Faris, Rainn Wilson, Eddie Izzard, and Wanda Sykes Director: Ivan Reitman Scriptwriter: Don Payne Music: Teddy Castellucci Regency Enterprises Running Time: 95 minutes Rating: PG 13 My Super Ex-Girlfriend is a humorous bit of fluff and a take-off on the super-heroes of comic book fame. In this story by Don Payne, G-Girl is the super-hero who saves the day and has a dual identity. G-Girl also has a temper and a problem with boyfriends. She literally smothers them and has a jealous streak a mile wide. Uma Thurman has the dual role of G-Girl and a woman (Jenny) who works in an art gallery. As G-Girl, her hair is blonde, but she wears a dark wig for her other life. Luke Wilson is between girlfriends and seeks dating advice from his friend, Rainn Wilson. Rainn talks big, but scores small. On a dare, Luke asks the attractive art person out for coffee, not knowing that when she goes to check her make-up, she is actually zooming out of the restaurant and stopping a major crime. In Luke’s office is Anna Faris, who is dating a male model with the intelligence of a brick. Luke likes Anna, though, but won’t admit it. When Uma takes dating Luke seriously, and I mean, seriously, he tries to break up with her. Wrong thing to do, as Uma retaliates with such things as throwing a white shark into his apartment. Luke knows Uma’s real identity, but is sworn not to tell. Enter a super-villain named Dr. Bedlam, who is an old beau of Uma’s and wants her back. What to do? It had better be fast before Uma serves Luke up as a noon meal. My Super Ex-Girlfriend pokes fun at super heroes by using a woman with an attitude. The super-villain has bumbling henchmen, but also his own story of forlorn love to tell. If you ever wondered what happened when super heroes have sex, it is answered here with a comic scene of Uma and Luke in bed and another scene of Uma and Luke and a new version of the Mile High Club. Dr. Bedlam tells how Uma got her super powers (oh, those rocks falling from space) and Rainn Wilson gives such bumbling advice you want to throw a rock at him. Uma Thurman does the dual identity role quite well. She sheds the meek art persona in seconds and becomes the tough fighter in a sexy black outfit. Anna Faris (known for the Scary Movie series) gives the wide-eyed innocent look another try in her role of a girl who likes a guy but doesn’t realize it. Wanda Sykes is the manager in Luke’s office and on the alert for perceived grievances. In fact, many offices would like to have her. Eddie Izzard’s Dr. Bedlam is both a bit bumbling and humorous. Kevin Spacey was miscast as Lex Luthor in Superman Returns, I wonder how Izzard would have done in that role? My Super Ex-Girlfriend is better than expected. The special effects are OK and Uma shows that she can take her physical prowess from the Kill Bill films and use them to comedic effect. Luke Wilson is the perfect foil as a guy who can’t make up his mind so uses everyone else’s advice. Be sure to stay through the end credits. Copyright 2006 Marie Asner
