Who Killed the Electric Car?

Who Killed the Electric Car? The demise of the EV1's. The title of this documentary was enough to get me to wondering a few things. One, was there ever such a thing and two, why would they kill it? Every time I fill up at the pump I think there has to be some other way to get around besides this gas guzzling, smog belching, metal machine I am driving. I mean if we can supposedly put a man on the moon, surely we can come up with an alternative mode of transportation. So if we had electric cars and someone “killed” the idea. I sure as heck want to know who that was.

What is significant about this documentary is that is doesn't come from any political view or try and push an agenda. Granted it makes a pretty strong case that the electric car was definitely wiped out but as for pointing fingers it plays all sides fairly. As with any good mystery there are
suspects. The government, Oil Companies, car manufactures, even consumers. Each played a vital part in the ultimate demise of the EV1. As with all well-done docu’s this one gives you lots of information while keeping you interested in the final outcome. There are stories within the story. History lessons. State legislature. Topics that would normally bore you to tears become a true-life who-done-it and you find yourself wanting to avenge the death of what could be a life changing way of transportation.

This film proves, as do most documentaries, that you can’t write a script that is as intriguing as true life. Writer/Director Chris Paine allows real
people to tell their side of the issue. You receive opinions from the owners and advocates of the EV1 as well as the carmakers and legislatures who took these machines off the road. And as I mentioned Paine doesn't sway the verdict one way or the other. He simply provides the facts and allows the viewer to come to their own conclusion. Regardless of how you feel about the Ev1’s you can’t deny the fact that we have to decide on an alternative quick. The film talks of other forms like the Hydrogen fuel Cell and hybrid vehicles. All of which are a definite improvement over the normal gas-guzzlers.

Along with the average Joe's of this movie many of Hollywood’s elite voice their opinions and concerns. Not just about EV1 but the effects of pollution and smog. Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Peter Horton, Phyllis Diller and more lend their thoughts in this project.

Though showing both sides this film still will amaze you at how Government and large companies can spin an issue and manipulate the American consumer. You will watch in amazement at how easy it is to be sucked into ad campaigns. It is easy to get angry with the tactics agencies use to get you to play along. I was mad that they would think me that gullible and unable to think for myself. But truth be known, I could have been aware of the facts if I had just paid attention. So again, the question remains, Who Killed the Electric Car? Watch and decide for yourself.

Rated PG for brief mild language it is safe for all age groups and not a bad idea to watch with all members of the family. Ultimately the future rides on the wheels of transportation and all generations will benefit or suffer from the decisions that are made. For me, I am sad that this little guy didn't make it and I feel a motivation to get involved. If not for me for those to follow. With a look at Who Killed the Electric Car, I’m Matt Mungle.
