Time Well Wasted Artist: Brad Paisley Label: Arista Nashville Length: 16 Tracks (and some “hidden” outtakes)/65.51 Minutes She’s the hand I’m holdingBrad Paisley’s Time Well Wasted is a solid mainstream country album. It features a wide array of country song styles and familiar topics. Therein lies one of the albums problem, it has a bit of a “paint by the numbers” feeling. Paisley obviously has some songwriting chops, he can play the guitar, and his band is tight. I’d like to see the man REALLY cut loose on his guitar and throw in some left turns and rocking surprises (like the and the rollicking speed-that-puppy-up and let ‘er fly instrumental “Time Warp.”) As it stands, Time Well Wasted is a slightly flawed yet superb traditionalist country with a nice bit of wit, faith, family and fun thrown in the mix. Highlights include “The World,” the big hit “Alcohol” (helping white people dance!), the witty “I’ll Take You Back,” and a too-short take on “The Uncloudy Day.” The real black mark on _Time Well Wasted_ is the embarrassingly bad “hidden” track entitled (are ya’ ready?) “Cornography” featuring Paisley, George Jones, Dolly Parton, and other folks who should have known better. This bawdy little attempt at reviving Grand Ol’ Opry style cornpone radio with jokes about male anatomy and Parton’s breasts falls flat (that’s being kind) and rudely interrupts an otherwise solid listening experience. Barry Nothstine hosts Soul Frequency a weekly FM radio show showcasing progressive rock, instrumental rock, power-pop, psychedelic rock, rock classics and more—great rock for the ages!
