Unbreakable Bond
Artist: GB5: Gutierrez Brothers
Label: TSG Records/Springhill Worship
Length: 10 tracks/42:39 min.

Rarely do I stumble across a CD. with so much potential which yet misses the mark almost entirely.  Gutierrez Brothers – the name immediately brings to mind Carlos Santana, or many other polyrhythmic Spanish-influenced ensembles: you would be sorely mistaken to hope for this.  What you will discover is a rather pedestrian collection of early '90’s sounding (ie – dated) R&B/Gospel with an occasional flamenco guitar or horn section.  It’s all well-performed, clean sounding, and God-focused, but just doesn’t stand out from the flock.

The only exceptions – “Tel Albo” at least reveals their Mexican roots, with interesting rhythms, and a strong melody. And “If I should Fall” – again relying upon the flamenco finger-picks acoustic guitar…not a top-40 hit, but a decent song all-the-same.

If I could speak directly to the Gutierrez Brothers I would tell them this, “You’ve got some talent and potential – please explore your heritage a bit more on the next CD  and I’ll be more than happy to listen.”  I imagine, if they were to follow that advice, so would everyone else.
