Artist:  Stephen Kropp
Label: Independent
Time: 38:16

When I picked this CD up, it looked like something cutting edge and current. Unfortunately, as I listened to it, the thought that came to mind was not “New,” but “Old Maranatha Praise.”

Kropp has done a quality job of basing his lyrics on Scripture (as shown by the references preceding the lyrics of each song on the packaging). While this is a commendable course to take, the songs seem to lack depth. The songs seem very simple in their structure. While the music is aimed at an adult audience, the lyrics would fit more comfortably in a kids praise album. Most of the songs could easily be worked into a kids church worship time. They would lend themselves easily to sing-alongs with 7-10 year olds.

A list of his influences (As listed at http://www.cdbaby.com where his CD is for sale) includes the Beatles, Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam & Green Day. After listening to the album for the second time, I could not find where this influence had come into play at all. Many times you can look at an artists influences, and find similarities in the style of music you yourself enjoy. If someone picks this up based on influences, they would be severely disappointed.
