Warship
Artist: Mark Mathis
Label: Indie
Length: 7 tracks / 30:16

Despite countless attempts, an authentic worship sentiment and quality, straight-forward rock ‘n’ roll rarely commingle. There are few bands who can cooperatively capture the spirit of, say, Tom Petty and the Holy Spirit in the same song. With his seven-song disc _Warship_, indie artist Mark Mathis does a masterful job of smashing together true worship and true rock ‘n’ roll.

Mathis makes no undercover attempts at the dreaded “I’m an artist who happens to be a Christian” front. He unashamedly proclaims in the first few seconds of “Overflow,” the album’s opening track, “I was born to worship / I was born to bow down / I was born to bless you / With my whole life.” This beautiful, Spiritual admission is backed up with full production—splendid acoustic guitars, big drums, subtle keys and Mathis’ fantastically rich voice.

Highlight tracks include the radio-friendly “Close To You,” the wonderfully layered “Doxology,” and the rockin’ closer, “Outlaw.”

RIYL: The Wallflowers, Pete Yorn, The Blackstones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
