It for What It Is
Artist: Alan Pollard Label: Peach Fuzz Records Length: 10/39:17 + bonus DVD I really wanted to like this CD. Acoustic guitars and singer/songwriter stylings are usually right up my alley. Pollard's voice has a fragile quality tenor not unlike Elliott Smith's, and he occasionally veers into a nasal Elvis Costello/Randy Newman area tonally. I'm just not sure what it is. To me, the best track came not on the album but on the bonus DVD, which is a one song video – "Things I May Be Missing," a sentimental-without-becoming-maudlin piece about a guy who gets a second chance to reconnect with his family. The songs on the CD have a sameness to them – several songs concern themselves with the delicacy of relationships and their maintenance – but the music just sounds dated. "Attrition of My Soul" is the oddball of the bunch, sounding the most modern of any of the tracks, with almost a Big Audio Dynamite sound to the vocals. In a weird way, this disc reminds me of another artist who has obviously been influenced by the Beatles – Ty Tabor of King's X. His solo album, Funeral may be more what Pollard had in mind when he set out on this project. See It For What it Is? If I'm being objective, I see a near miss. Brian A. Smith
