Continuum
Artist: Prototype www.prototypeonline.com Label: Nightmare Records Time: 11 tracks/42:45 min Continuum starts off with a technical, speed-metal song that flirts with progressive issues (mostly involving changing volumes & speed). Prototype wants you to think of them when it comes to Prog, and not just aggressive metal. "The Way it Ends" is an interesting title for a first song, but it is a great intro to the sounds that the band displays throughout its second national release. The second and third tracks show that the band is much more comfortable playing Thrash Metal than trying the more melodic sounds. While "Probe" is strong and well delivered, "Devotion" seems to be holding back rather than delivering a solid ballad. I understand the desire for a change of pace, & appreciate the work the drummer does to try to keep the track flowing, "Devotion" only seems a good fit when it picks up the pace for the guitar solo. The disc continues to showcase fast metal with a strong melodic touch. If you think Rush's instrumentation would sound great with Metallica's vocals, Prototype is the band for you. Vocalist Vince Levalois voice does have the same melodic, yet aggressive, sound that James Hetfield displays on Metallica's releases. The band is technically right there with them as well, but still retains the melodic sounds that Metallica threw away on St. Anger. Two small, short, acoustic songs "Undying" is much better than instrumental "Sea of Tranquility" are the only other interruptions in the assault on the senses that Prototype delivers. If you are looking for a band that hearkens back to Metallica's greatest years, Continuum is a good bet. Enjoy. By Jonathan Nelson
