The
Legend of the Bonecarver
Artist: Pyramaze Label: Nightmare Records Length: 10 tracks / 47:56 The Legend of the Bonecarver is Pyramaze’s second attempt at creating an epic, powerful metal/progressive concept album, and this time around, though I’m not without criticisms, the result is absolutely a success. These guys play exceptionally well together. Not one aspect of their sound predominates any other, including the vocals, yet each of them coalesce into a surprisingly gripping and blood-pumping style. Prog-rock elements can be found in most of the songs, including piano and keyboards layered into the mix, and combined with the superb guitar work, ...Bonecarver is lent a forceful, yet dreamlike feel – it compliments the fantasy concept of the album perfectly. Musically, this album is quite amazing, and I only hope they further delve into perfecting this affecting style they’ve developed. My primary criticism of ...Bonecarver is in its presentation. Narrative moments in the album tell us blatantly what the setup for the concept is; I felt this upfront method of storytelling robs ...Bonecarver of a bit of its mystery. Let the listener discover the story on their own, I say – the great music is reason enough to come back and give the record many spins, and the lyrics, besides the narrative parts, are well-written enough to satisfy the listener that wants to discover the story taking place. But my criticisms pretty much end here – this is a very good epic metal album, and I can’t wait to hear another one from the band. Jonathan Avants 5/31/06
