Without the City Lights
Artist: Mike Reeb
Label: Ground Vinyl
Length: 11tracks/ 27:54

If you thought Mike Reeb’s 5 song Canvas EP was special, you will find his first full length project, Without the City Lights,  just as transcending and transporting. You will feel like you are sitting with him as he pours out song after song on his touching heart-on-his- sleeve manner. Intimate and personal, lyrics full losing in love, handling life and the issues thrown at us all.

“Oxford Street” (gives us the title of the album)  “June” and “Age in Our Hands” make the jump from the EP.  Foggy and magical, thoughtful and melancholic, these remain some of  Reeb’s best songs.

“Soft Spoken” opens the new set with much warmth and yearning and Bethany Jones’ violin solo pulls at the heart strings with an urgency that can bring tears. “Consequences” sports a memorable melody, a necessary Jones’ violin, and catchy word rhythms. Reeb’s vocal is imaginative,  spitting out the lyrics versus his usual manner of letting them roll of  his mouth, giving the effect that he wants you to listen closely to this one.

Perfect closer “Like A Wing” speaks of the peace that can be found in God’s love.

All in all a very satisfying project, Reeb’s bare bones, true folk approach conjures visions of early Paul Simon and Dylan.  Although he has added an additional voice with Rebekah MacLeod , and that wonderful violin,  Reeb’s music could benefit from additional instrumentation and would add depth to these beautiful offerings.
