Shallow Water
Artist: Servant
Label:  Retroactive Records
Length:  9 Tracks/37.29 Minutes

Retroactive Records does it again!  Thank God for this label…Retroactive continues to release fantastic versions of forgotten, lost, or ignored Christian rock classics.  One of the latest is the debut from pioneering Christian hard rockers Servant.  Shallow Water features nine (relatively) hard rocking songs in the classic Christian rock vein (think Petra, early DeGarmo & Key) all wrapped up in a very nice package featuring the original artwork. Shallow Water is a nice time capsule back to the early days of the Christian rock movement, when projects like this were few and far between, and bands like Servant were misunderstood and underappreciated.  The album features classic hard rocking, social commentary, some progressive touches, and some nice vocal harmonies.  The standout cut on _Shallow Water _is the cover of “Water Grave” originally performed by Dogwood (and also covered by the Imperials and Atomic Opera!).  And lyrics like this can’t help but put a smile on your face (from “Holy Roller Blues”):

Well, they call me a holy roller, yes, and I do believe it’s true
Y’know, they call me a holy roller, yes, and I do believe it’s true
Well if they knew my Jesus
They’d be a’ doin’ some rolling too!
Well, they call me a Bible thumper
I do believe, believe it’s true
Hey, if they really knew what was in the Word of God
They’d be a thumpin’ that Bible too!
