This is Bigger Than You And I
Artist: The Secret Handshake
Label: Independent
Length: 6 tracks/ 21:05

The Secret Handshake hasn’t been at this long, but they’ve already begun to build a name for themselves—they’ve been the number one indie artist at myspace and have singles featured in purevolume’s compilation Bands You Need to Know.  And just one listen of their newest EP, This is Bigger Than You And I, makes it clear why.

A singer/songwriter artist with a backup band, The Secret Handshake is primarily the work of Luis Dubuc.  His earnest, heart-strained vocal style is carried very well by piano-lead melodies and electronic beats, composed of songs about longing, heartbreak, and hope.  Dubuc wears his heart on his sleeve, but the focus is on crafting good songs.  “An Outline” is an amazing opener, sweet and sorrowful as it recollects lost love, but the following track, “Coastal Cities,” may be the real highlight of the EP, featuring beautiful rapid piano play and memorable melodies, effective and sincere in its desire for a new start.

Though a couple songs in its latter half may be give-or-take in their quality, the bulk of This is Bigger Than You And I is impressive, featuring strong songwriting and some of the best emo/pop I’ve heard this year.  A very good EP from an indie artist certainly on its way up.
