These
Things I Remember
Artist: Sojourn Label: Independent Length: 11/46:08 Note to faithful Tollbooth readers who think this band name rings a faint bell: this is not the same Michigan band Sojourn that does jazz-based rock, as featured a few years back. This Sojourn is more of a community praise band, featuring contributions from eleven singers and musicians, and their album, These Things I Remember, is based on the Psalms of David. Female lead Rebecca Dennison have a richness to them that sometimes approaches Natalie Merchant, although her intonation on "Crippled Soul" is much nearer to Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies. Jeremy Quillo is the predominant male vocal, and sounds as if he's been listening to a lot of Michael Card. "Psalm 42" is the most unique track, opening with an Indian string arrangement, then proceeding to an "Anne Murray meets opera" vocal run – with that description, readers are probably shuddering. Yet, it is the most striking of any of the songs, and by far the biggest departure from the flow of the disc. Fans of lighter rock, and worship music will appreciate this disc. If you prefer louder music, or worship in the vein of The Listening, this album is not for you. Brian A. Smith
