The Crossing - August 2007 Edition

New and not so new...

Eisley - The kids are alright...or are they Eisley is made up of four siblings and a cousin and is named, in part, after a Tattooine spaceport found in a galaxy far, far away. The singing sisters Stacy and Sherri DuPree helped by guitarist sister Chauntelle, drummer brother Weston and bassist cousin Garron write moderately gothic, but very pretty pop tunes that somehow evoke the inner world of the film and book series A Series of Unfortunate Events. I think they would be at home in that world somehow. The clothes and imagery on display on their two albums somehow invoke that of the Baudelaires. Hailing from Tyler, Texas which is east of Dallas, the DuPree's have released their second album entitled Combinations on August 14th. It's decidedly a bit more straightforward than their debut Room
Noises
but still manages to be both quirky and melancholy at the same time. Definitely one of the more promising bands out there and a band that should be rising in notoriety very soon. Fans of Leigh Nash and Sixpence None The Richer will eat the music of the DuPree's up. Look for them on tour with Mute Math this Fall.

The Waterboys - Scottish singer/songwriter Mike Scott returns with his 12th overall album. That includes his two solo albums _Bring 'Em All In and Still Burning. His new release is entitled Book of Lightning and it is available on August
21st. If you like bands with a strong spiritual component, like U2 for instance, look no further than Mike Scott and his band The Waterboys. From the Big Music of the first three albums to the raggle taggle fiddle-led albums of
Fisherman's Blues and Room To Roam to the polish of Dream Harder to the solo efforts to the spiritually infused and experimental A Rock In The Weary Land and Universal Hall to the present, Mike Scott has created a discography with plenty of depth and musicality. The new effort Book of Lightning in my estimation, (I snagged a copy already) is a cross between A Rock In The Weary Land and Still Burning. It's not necessarily a new direction musically, but
it is still a solid effort which rewards with repeated listenings.

Without further ado, here's the Rock rolling your way...

LYRICS of the MONTH:

He was throwing grain to the ground below (ground below)
With dreary circles of his arm going slow (very slow)
His cap pulled down round his ears
To hide the smile and watery tears

My loving wife its so wonderful
How small seeds gracefully do grow
Into beautiful things that spring from these rows
With their beautiful names and beautiful sounds

Dreary birds parade across the dreary sky but down below
The woman absentmindedly begins to sow
How she sows the seeds her husband loved so much
But he's no longer here with us

But her life is so beautiful
      As memories continue to grow
Into beautiful things that spring from these rows
With their beautiful names and beautiful sounds

      Distant though I am
      Orange, gold and green
      Firing flaming colors surround me
I'm always wondering where you are
I'm always wondering where you are

Darling shouldn't be the one wondering
After all I'm the one who is gone
I'm always wondering where you are

I'm always wondering where you are
Darling shouldn't be the one wondering
After all I'm the one who is gone
      Who is gone.

Eisley, the song Memories from the album Room Noises.

      See you in cool September...
